The Victorian Village of Ferndale, full of surprises,
deserves more than a day to discover. 264 miles north of Sacramento and
San Francisco, it's a beautiful drive from the major airports (Sacramento,
San Francisco, Oakland, San Jose) or fly into the Arcata/Eureka airport
in McKinleyville, 45 minutes north of Ferndale (car rentals, Door-to-Door
Airporter shuttle service available).
Gasoline/Fuel: Tipple Motors, 524 Main St. When Tipples is closed, buy a prepaid Renner gas card at Valley Grocery for use in the card lock at Fernbridge (or any other Renner station).

California Highway 101 is the most direct
route to the North Coast from the San Francisco Bay Area.
- 5 hours from the S.F. Golden Gate Bridge to Ferndale
- 2.5 hours from Ukiah to Ferndale
- 1 hour from Garberville to Ferndale
From California Highway 101, take the
Fernbridge/Ferndale exit. Cross historic Fernbridge and drive through
five miles of pastoral views to Ferndale's Main Street.
If California Highway 101 is obstructed
affected areas may choose to make county roads available for appropriate
vehicles. County Road--Bell Springs Road: If
CalTrans warns of an obstruction in the mountains on Highway 101 (at
the Confusion Hill area of Mendocino County, for example), this rural
road from Leggett rejoins Hwy. 101 at Garberville. Bell Springs
Road is a county road, not a state highway, and not
suitable for heavy trucks or RV travelers. It is
packed gravel in Mendocino County, paved in Humboldt County. There are
no places to stop, services or restrooms along this route, so be sure your
gas tank is full. Overall, it will add about 45 minutes to your trip.

If you are on the Interstate 5 corridor:
- Highway 299: CalTrans’ main east-west
artery features the spectacular beauty of the wild Trinity River. Leaving
I-5 north of Sacramento and connecting to Highway 101 at Arcata (north
of Ferndale), Hwy. 299 has plenty of services available, and receives
priority attention when winter storms hit.
- Highway 36: When the weather is clear, Hwy. 36 is
a beautiful, leisurely drive, winding around lakes and through forests
to connect to Highway 101 at Alton, 15 minutes south of Ferndale.
From the Sacramento Airport to Ferndale is
- 5 hours
via Interstate 5 to Highway 20 to Highway 101
- 5.5 hours via Interstate 5 to Highway 299 to Highway 101
- 5 hours via Interstate 5 to Highway 36 to Highway 101
